A Part of The Chaos

Premiere: Family Line by Bell the Band

We are all a composition of our ancestors and past, less evolved versions of ourselves.

Following the untimely death of Frightened Rabbits frontman Scott Hutchison, Caitlin Marie Bell of Bell the Band was inspired to write a song about who we are and where we come from. She believes that:

“Each of us carries the good and the bad of our family history, and with that comes a certain responsibility to care for and nurture who we are. However, I also like to believe that along with that responsibility comes the compassion, empathy, and forgiveness that has traveled from generation to generation.”

Caitlin drew from the pain of losing Hutchison when writing, ‘Family Line.’ His art and music had such a large impact on Caitlin, she found solace understanding her pain in the context of her family history. Knowing that everyone who came before her had felt a similar pain at some point in their life.

When we consider what it means to be human, there’s often a tendency to focus on the monumental events which define our lives. However when she writes, Caitlin finds inspiration from different, often overlooked sources. The food and water which keep us alive, the air we breath: the functions which unify the human experience. Caitlin says that, “For me, making music is another element of my life that connects me to my humanity: past, present, and future.”For Bell, music is an avenue of, “emoting the most intimate, difficult, and intense feelings without ever needing to speak a word.”

That feeling that comes with the crisp not-quite-winter air. The inner contemplation which accompanies a strong drink in the solitude of the woods as the breeze blows by. ‘Family Line’, by Bell the Band, embodies the unshakable feeling that you aren’t alone, despite looking around in an empty room.
