Premiere: Becoming What We’re Running from by Touch Tunnel
Today we are thrilled to premiere, “Becoming What We’re Running From” by Touch Tunnel. A song inspired by feeling stuck, growing older and reminiscing about the past.
“Becoming What We’re Running From” is layered in contemplation, melancholia and an underlying resiliency. When writing the song, Matt Maroulakos was inspired by the emotions which come from recognizing you are in a dark place, and the goals we set to escape the pain. However when these benchmarks are met in the future, it's often not with the unbridled pride and happiness that we expected to feel. Like the title of the song suggests, there are moments in life where we think we’ve overcome the issues that once defined us. Although, when the hollowness still pervades in spite of all we’ve accomplished, it's hard to avoid acknowledging the inconvenient truth that we’ve only been, “Becoming What We’re Running From.”
The video, which accompanies the premiere of the song, demonstrates the ideas which inspired Touch Tunnel. Filmmaker Nick Noyes, and actress Jessica Morgan represent this; with Jessica being depicted as a well put together, well off young woman who seemingly has everything. However in spite of all she’s accomplished; none of it truly matters if day after day she’s struggling emotionally. This theme pervades each creative angle of the song as it resonates with filmmaker, actor and musician alike. Jessica told us that, “‘As an actor (who bartends to make ends meet) this song hits so close to home, do I continue working until 4am so that I can pay for rent and headshots...or do I bite the bullet and get some job security? When do we hang up our dreams?” This question only a select few do not have to answer.
Matt described to A Part of the Chaos that after opportunities working as an engineer and producer for other artists presented themselves his, “own art took a back seat.” Maroulakos recognized what was happening and knew he needed to reallocate some of his time and energy into remembering his own music: “I really need to create. It wasn't until I felt so removed from my art that I realized this. If I don't carve out space to play I tend to go a little nuts.” “Becoming What We’re Running From” serves as a way for Maralarkous to return the creative limelight towards his own vision and passion to create.
As to why he released the song now, Markoulakos said, “Timing is important, so don't wait too long to catch the wave. There are a lot of great songs sitting on hard drives that could be speaking to people.” “Becoming What We’re Running From” was written, arranged, produced and performed by Matt Maroulakos. Drums were performed by Dana LaMarca and the track was mastered by Mike Piacentini of Sony Music.
